Professional Biography

Assistant Professor, Inflammation and Equine Health

Dr. Allen Page is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Veterinary Science at the University of Kentucky’s Maxwell H. Gluck Equine Research Center. Dr. Page received both his B.S. and D.V.M. from the University of California, Davis before moving to Lexington to complete a rotating internship at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute and a Ph.D. at the University of Kentucky. His primary research focus is on the inflammatory response to exercise and injury in equine athletes across a variety of disciplines, including work to determine whether whole-blood messenger RNA (mRNA) expression can be used to assess fitness and predict impending injury in racehorses. Recently, Dr. Page’s laboratory has begun to explore the metabolic effects of various intra-articular medications on horses, with a particular focus on whether commonly used corticosteroids could be having unintended side effects. Additional work by the lab seeks to better understand the anti-inflammatory properties of various medications using an experimental model for acute synovitis in horses. A final research interest is the development of diagnostics for various infectious diseases based on mRNA expression analysis and/or serum antibody detection. Previous work by Dr. Page has included research on Lawsonia intracellularis, a bacterial disease of young horses and the cause of equine proliferative enteropathy, as well as Rhodococcus equi in foals. Dr. Page is an active member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and the University of Kentucky’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee.
